Women’s Fly Casting Class | Destin Florida Fly Fishing

With a vision and a goal to get more women into fly fishing, the first Women’s Fly Casting class in Destin Florida was a HUGE success! 12 women were introduced to the sport through a casting class held at The Gulf Restaurant on Okaloosa Island. Bottomless mimosas were served as the ladies were first shown the fly rods, how to assemble them, and what the different fly line means.

They then got to learn the basics of fly casting in the lawn where they could feel the rod, throw the line, and have some one on one guidance to get a better feel for the sport. After a few throws of line, they all got to catch their first (cardboard) fish! The Gulf was a great location as it had large grassy areas plus a water line that the girls could practice casting into.

After casting, the ladies stayed for brunch to network, mingle and enjoy the atmosphere of the day. The consensus among the group was overwhelming — It was exciting, fun, and now they’re looking forward to casting at some REAL fish.

It was the perfect lead in — Lion’s Tale Adventures is now offering fly fishing trips in Destin Florida! We have three options: Offshore Saltwater Fly Fishing on board the Pathfinder, Skinny Water Fly Fishing on a Skiff for a single angler with Captain Kolt, or our newest Electric Bike Fishing Adventure where you can ride the beaches sight fishing for schools of fish. Step 2 after the casting class is to go on a fly fishing adventure to practice your newfound skill set.

The event was a sell out, and such a success that Captain Lionel is planning more to come the rest of this year. Through this event, Lion’s Tale Adventures was able to donate over $400 to the Shelter House, a domestic violence safe haven here in Fort Walton Beach. If interested in participating in a future class, send us an email and we will add you to the list to be notified once the next dates are announced!

Huge thanks to our sponsors, Moonshine Rods and To Do in Destin – and of course to our instructors, as we could not have done this without you! We look forward to hosting the next Fly Casting Class in Destin Florida and want you to be a part of it.

Destin Florida Tarpon Fishing

Destin Florida Tarpon Fishing

Throughout my adult life, the ones who know me for some time will tell you anytime I wanted to do something, I was always 100% in. My drive and passion means I can’t quit until I achieve whatever I set out to do. My biggest, almost crazy obsession with anything that swims started when I was young and I am constantly chasing my next biggest catch. Most recently, I’ve targeted an elusive fish – one with a beautiful coat of silver, a perfectly put together blend of elegance, grace, power, and strength. Can you guess? I’m talking about the silver king.. The Tarpon.

Destin Florida Tarpon Fishing

I finally made the catch of all catches this past summer and it didn’t disappoint. Tarpon is hard to hook; they fight hard and have crazy acrobatics. More often than not you don’t catch that fish, even after you hook it and fight it. You only have about a 37% chance of actually getting that fish to the boat and putting your hands on it, and that’s one of the many reasons why its a prize catch.

Destin Florida Tarpon Fishing
Tarpon can grow from 4-8ft and weigh up to 280lbs, another reason they can be so hard to catch. To put that in perspective, the average human adult male weighs 195lbs. Typically when you hook this fish, you’ll lose him in the first 2-10 seconds. If your tug of war makes it past the first 10 seconds, you’re about to be in for the fight of your life. One hour? Two hours? Who will quit first, you or the fish? While you tire by the second, a Tarpon rises to the surface and breathes a gulp of air – You read that right, a fish who can breathe air. They are obligate air breathers, which is why you see them rolling on the surface of the water and if they are not allowed to access the surface, they will die. That breathe of air gives the Tarpon a quick burst of energy to continue the fight.

Destin Florida Tarpon Fishing
Fossil research shows that Tarpon have been swimming in our oceans since prehistoric times, meaning in this case, you’re actually fishing for a dinosaur. If you ever have had the opportunity of hooking and landing one, appreciate it. Indulge in the moment, take hundreds of photos, and stare at the beauty of this fish because it may only happen once in your lifetime.

Tarpon Fishing Destin Florida

For me, catching something this big, monster-ish, almost dinosaur-ish fish, something happens to me. When I see that silver tip break the surface, my heart stops in anticipation, my brain frozen in awe – and this is how I know I have become addicted to this fish.

Tarpon Fishing Destin Florida

Destin Florida Tarpon Fishing is best from mid May to early August when schools of these fish are found migrating South through the Gulf of Mexico to spawn. Get yourself locked in with an angler that has Tarpon experience for your best chance to hook one up. Cost on Tarpon trips will vary, inquire for details.

Red Snapper Season in Destin Florida | June Fishing Report

Red Snapper Season in Destin Florida

Red Snapper season in Destin Florida is officially open for Federally licensed charters from June 1-August 1, with open season for recreational fishing and State licensed charters following close behind from June 11-July 25. Red Snapper have a 2 per person limit, with 16” minimum size for all waters.

Red Snapper Season Destin Florida

If you’re wondering why Red Snapper is a highly sought-after fish, we found that the taste is what draws people in. The white meat is lean, has a gentle, sweet, nutty flavor with a firm texture. Whether baked, broiled, grilled or fried, this mild-flavored fish always delivers a great taste while also being a very healthy food source. Four ounces of uncooked red snapper contain just 110 calories and 1 gram of fat.

They are also a fun catch.  Large Red Snappers will swim in circles and pull, making it quite the fight.  For those fishing for them on their own, it is recommended that a fluorocarbon leader be used as Red Snapper have excellent eyesight and sharp teeth, so the line needs to be invisible in the water.  Find them in depths of 50-60ft and most Red Snappers prefer live bait; they can be caught on dead Cigar Minnows, squid or cut fish by a simple drop in the water.  You can also try chumming them up to the surface with chunked fish. This creates a frenzy for one, and it will also bring them far away from the structures that they may pull you into to cut your line.

Destin Florida Charter Fishing

If you can’t make it to fish during Red Snapper season, you’re still in luck. The snapper family boasts a variety of fish that are equally as tasty, with limits year-round.  Vermillion snappers for example are just as tasty, and though they are smaller in size, a limit of 10 per person will guarantee you still come home with plenty to eat.  Mangrove Snapper, White Snapper and Black Snapper are also additional options.

June 1 is also the opening of Gag Grouper season, another delicious fish that anglers set out to find. Those run a 2 per person limit, with 24” minimum size for all waters. Grouper are a beautiful looking fish and are a white meat fish that’s equally as tasty.

Captain Gabrielle Barnes

With Destin being the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village, we’ve got plenty of boats offering Charter fishing who love Snapper Season.  What better Father’s Day gift could there be than finding and booking one for a day on the water?  Quality time spent with Dad and tasty meal afterwards – sounds like the perfect gift to me.

Triggerfish Season in Destin, Florida | Family Friendly Fishing Charter

March 1st kicked off Triggerfish season in Destin, Florida, which many offshore anglers were excited for. In our area, Triggerfish are normally found nearshore and offshore, hanging around artificial reefs and natural bottoms, in depths between 50 to 300 feet. They share the same habitat as Red Snapper and Gag Grouper, so catching a Triggerfish is usually a sign that additional species are below as well.

Triggerfish in Destin Florida

The average size of the Triggerfish ranges from 12in to 20in, with females growing larger. They are a distinctive gray in color and have the ability to change their color while swimming in open waters. The mouth is small but mighty, containing a set of sharp teeth even the most experienced anglers don’t want to mess with. Along with the teeth, Triggerfish have a strong jaw that can make a hook difficult to set.

Triggerfish in Destin Florida

Triggerfish are pretty aggressive feeders; a positive if you’ve set out to catch them specifically, but a negative if you were trying to reach the Red Snapper or Grouper they hang around with. Shrimp and any sort of cut bait like squid will do the trick as they typically chase anything they perceive as being food, and a small hook is necessary due to the size of their mouth.

A keeper size Triggerfish must be 15″ or more, from the mouth to the fork of the tail. The limit is 1 per person per day, and these fish are plentiful. Hands down, one of the best fighting fish and quickest bite while fishing. This is one reason that Triggerfish make for a great family friendly fishing charter, because the kids will be excited to feel a bite so quickly.

Lastly, they are a great tasting, white meat fish with a very low fishy taste. Typically triggerfish is cooked as a filet to show off the taste, but can be cooked however you best like your fish.

Monster Black Drums in Destin, Florida

Ready to catch some Monster Black Drums in Destin, Florida?

In this quick clip, Captain Lionel James and Captain James Marko (of Goliath Grouper Fishing Charters in Boca Grande, Florida) team up for a day of sight fishing for monster Black Drums in Destin, Florida. What we didn’t expect to find was several schools of Black Drum containing 40 to 60 fish per school lingering around shallow sand bars! We chased several trying to get them to bite, but with the weather being warm they weren’t as hungry as we’d hoped. Putting a bait in front of them was easy, and it took a bit of chasing but we were finally able to hook into a few and they put up a good fight! Not the prettiest fish to hook but it made for an exciting yet frustrating day of fishing.
