Fly Fishing Destin Florida

What is sight-fishing?

Sight-fishing requires you to spot fish in the water, which sounds far easier than it actually is. Distinguishing the features of the fish beneath the surface of the water can be tricky depending on where you are and how much experience you have. Some people look to see whether they can see shiny spots with shadows over it. Fish tend to linger over their beds, and it can be difficult to figure out if they’re spawning, protecting fry or just idling. A pair of sunglasses with colored lenses can help to create contrast between the water and fish. Your color choice for your lenses is truly just a personal preference.

Once you’ve found a fish, you’ll want to select the proper bait so that you can catch the fish. Baiting with something brightly colored can be advantageous to catch the fish’s attention—as long as it doesn’t mimic prey. You’ll have to cast your bait accurately and with the proper amount of stealth, so you don’t scare your target fish away. In the end, sight-fishing takes concentration and a keen eye.

What is fly-fishing?

Fly-fishing is unique because of the angling technique that it uses. The casting is different because you don’t use a standard lure, spinner or plug with a fly rod and line. It’s extremely lightweight and is supposed to represent something small like an insect, small fish or shrimp. The line itself used in fly-fishing is heavy and can be “swung” in the air and carry the fly out over the water. Fly-fishing is a truly fun way to switch up your fishing days. While catch fish with a spinning rod may get monotonous and boring, this is the way to shake things up.

What is a Redfish?

Redfish are commonly found on all Florida coasts along shell bars and rocky or grassy shorelines. The Choctawhatchee Bay is the perfect spot to fish for redfish while you’re in Destin, FL. They are typically caught sight-fishing. They’re a beautiful bronze or reddish color with a white underside. They’re sizeable and range from 10 to 12 pounds but can go all the way up to 30 pounds. This means that they’re a great option for your table when you’re looking to catch and eat. Redfish are a favorite among most anglers and taste great when fresh.

Put your sight and fly-fishing skills to the test with redfish in Destin, FL! If you ever feel like you need a long and relaxing vacation in the great outdoors, there is no better place to spend it. You have everything you need—perfect weather and beautiful scenery and you’ll be fishing from 26″ Pathfinder. Don’t miss it.

What is the average size of the vermilion snapper?

Vermilion snappers are typically in the 1 to 3-pound range. If you get really lucky, you may get a giant mingo that weighs in above 4 pounds. For length, most are between 14 and 24 inches (maximum).

What bait should I use and where do I find them?

When catching mingos, you’ll use a multiple hook rig and bait them with squid, mackerel, shrimp, etc. It’s common for these types of fish to bite eagerly at any type of small bait. So make sure your bait is small, and don’t hesitate to use something tasty. Drop your rig to the bottom of your target area (wreck, reef, ledge, etc.). Keep in mind that you’ll probably catch more than one fish with each of these drops, and they may not be all vermilion snappers. You can catch red snappers, triggerfish, white snappers, etc. Anything that hangs out with a vermilion snapper might get caught up in the fray.

Triggerfish Season in Destin Florida

March 5, 2019 by Lionel James

March 1st kicked off Triggerfish season in Destin Florida, along with the start of Spring fishing and we are gearing up to get on some fish. It’s a popular Spring catch that we’re going to learn a little more about today.

Triggerfish Season in Destin Florida

In our area, Triggerfish are normally found nearshore and offshore, hanging around artificial reefs and natural bottoms. They share the same habitat as Red Snapper and Gag Grouper, so catching a Triggerfish is usually a sign that additional species are below as well.

Triggerfish are pretty aggressive feeders; a positive if you’ve set out to catch them specifically, but a con if you were trying to reach the Red Snapper or Grouper they hang around with. Shrimp and any sort of cut bait will do the trick as they typically chase anything they perceive as being food, and a small hook is necessary due to the size of their mouth. They like to hang on the bottom, but will chase your bait as it falls as soon as it sees it.

Triggerfish Season in Destin Florida

The average size of the Triggerfish ranges from 12in to 20in, with females growing larger. World record was 13lbs, Florida state record is 12lbs. They are a distinctive gray in color and have the ability to change their color while swimming in open waters. The mouth is small but mighty, containing a set of sharp teeth even the most experienced anglers don’t want to mess with. Along with the teeth, Triggerfish have a strong jaw that can make a hook difficult to set.

Amberjack Fishing Season Destin, Florida

May 8, 2018 by Lionel James

Amberjack Fishing Season Destin, Florida

May 1st marks the opening of the 2018 Amberjack Fishing Season Destin Florida, fishing the Gulf of Mexico State waters. The season will be open from May 1st – 31st and will re-open August 1 and continue to October 31st, 2018.

The Greater Amber Jacks (AJ’S) are hands down one of my absolute favorite fish to catch.. it is pound for pound one of they hardest fighting fish out there!

Amberjack Fishing Season Destin Florida

Its a fish fight like no other – lifelong anglers are brought to their knees trying to hold on when they are hooked up with an Amberjack. No matter the age of the angler or the number of Amberjack you have caught, each individual AJ carries an attitude of their own so when you see that rod tip start to bend.. HANG ON!

Here on the Florida Emerald Coast we are lucky to have a healthy population for our Amberjack Fishing Season that can be caught throughout our state waters from a mile of the beach to the 9 mile state water mark. There are plenty of short jacks in close that offer a great fight. The larger, keeper size jacks can be found a little further offshore and the legal size to keep is 34 inches to the fork.

The next question we often get is how to catch them. With a livewell full of pinfish, hardtails, cigar minnows, and or ruby redlips on circle hooks and with egg weights will give you ample amount of chances at catching your one fish limit. Another fun way to catch an Amberjack is free line any of the previous baits listed and on a butterfly jig worked through the water column will produce.

Sometimes undervalued as table fare, Amberjacks have a “very good” edibility rating and can be prepared a number of different ways – grilled, baked, smoked or blackened. The keeper size over 34″ boasts a huge portion of meat so one keeper per person is plenty to feed your family. Bring the whole family, a group of friends, or just a buddy or two – Amberjack Fishing Season Destin Florida really is an awesome time for everyone!
